'Reboot' was an appropriate title for this week's installment of Green Lantern. The season premiere established Hal Jordan's new role as a GL Honor Guard. This episode was more about 'getting the old gang back together,' as Hal put it. Though the idea of Hal being an Honor Guard was interesting, as it meant there was really no limit to the directions the series could take from that point. The fact that they chose to return to the old status quo of Hal, Kilowog, and Aya traversing the universe on the Interceptor should have been cause for disappointment. But this episode managed to repeatedly defy expectations and ensure that Season 2 won't merely be a rehash of the first.One of the downsides to the direction in Season 1 was that the opportunities to pair Hal with his fellow lanterns were limited. That's something the creators seem intent on rectifying now. Following last week's skirmish with Guy Gardner, Hal had run-ins with Tomar-Re, Ch'p, and a handful of other distinctly non-humanoid Lanterns. I was pleasantly surprised at the comedic tone to most of these encounters. The real highlight of the episode was Ch'p. His total thrashing of Hal was hilarious, and it was cute seeing the duo team up later in order to rescue Aya's programming. I was actually really disappointed when it became clear that Ch'p won't be a regular member of Hal's crew. The show wouldn't hurt for having a regular dose of the sort of comedic relief that only a Green Lantern squirrel can provide.

Luckily, at least Tomar-Re looks to be a regular cast member, and he should offer a nice personality counterpoint to the headstrong Hal and the grumpy Kilowog. Aya's mention of Razer is hopefully a sign that he too will be returning to the fold sooner or later.Tonally, this was a very schizophrenic episode. The first and third acts were serious, showcasing Hal and friends battling more rogue Manhunters. But the second act was much more wacky and lighthearted. While this required a bit of continual adjustment, on the whole it's nice to see the writers and animators having more fun with this series. The humor is helping Green Lantern to find its own, unique voice among the current crop of superhero animated fare. Again, that's an element that really shouldn't be ignored going forward.

Another pleasant surprise was the fact that the the series isn't wasting any time getting to the heart of the new overarching conflict. I thought for sure that we'd see Green Lantern fall into a familiar formula where our heroes travel from planet to planet, battling Manhunters and only after numerous battles would they encounter the source of the threat. Instead, the Anti-Monitor showed his titanic, armored face before 'Reboot' was finished. What's more, we learned the gist of his plot against the Green Lanterns. I doubt anyone ended their 'Reboot' viewing assuming that Hal was killed by the Anti-Monitor's blast. As enjoyable as the supporting cast has become, this is still his show. The question is merely where he disappeared to (the Anti-Matter Universe would be the most logical choice). No doubt we'll find out next week. And after two strong episodes in a row, I'm very much looking forward to it.
